Background
The tradition
of Chinese landscape painting began in the Tang Dynasty
(618 – 907), considered a golden age in Chinese
literature and art. Stimulated by contact and trade with
India and the Middle East, the empire flourished and
brought forth new ideas in art, poetry, music and
philosophy.
Chinese
landscape painting is a natural evolution from the
calligraphy so inherent in a beautiful written language
derived from pictures. The paintings seek not to show
the scene, but to evoke the numinous harmony of man with
nature.
