TUPELO - The GumTree Museum of Art will show off a
few of its prized possessions in February. Tina
Lutz, director, reached into the museum's private
collection for an exhibit called "30/180."
"It's 30 pieces of art work out of 180 pieces in our
collection," Lutz said.
The exhibit will open to the public, on Wednesday,
and it'll be on display until Feb.28.
"It's part of our celebration," Lutz said. "February
marks the 25th anniversary of the GumTree Museum of
Art, formerly the Tupelo Artist Guild."
The name change took place in 2003, and that's about
when the museum began accumulating work. "Our
mission has been to bring museum-quality art work to
Tupelo, and to applaud local and state artists, as
well," Lutz said.
In addition, the collection includes work by past
Best in Show winners at the Cellular South GumTree
Festival. "We pick a piece that represents their
award-winning work," Lutz said.
The exhibit will feature art by Susan. Goff, Ke
Francis, Jean Thickens Cooper, Glen Ray Tutor, Rick
Anderson, Lynn Long, Gus Staub, Helene Fielder, Rob
Reedy,' Kathleen Fetters, Buddy Me-Carty and Maltby
Sykes. "That's just a few of them." Lutz said. It
will include paintings, pottery, drawings, prints
and mixed-media work.
The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Tuesday to
Saturday. There's no admission, but donations are
accepted. "You need to come down and see what we
have," Lutz said. "Come down and celebrate with us,"
