TUPELO - A work of art can be a free-flowing
thing, as well as a structured one.
Students at Tupelo High School
got
a lesson in the second variety. The results of their
work are featured in a new exhibit called
"Mathsterpieces."
"It's by math students and art students from grades
10 to 12," said Tina Lutz, executive director of the
GumTree Museum of Art.
About a year ago, artist Marion Drennen visited THS
one day to discuss the relationship between math and
art. Teachers Patty Hosch and Judy Mattoxenjoyed the
talk, so they applied to the Association for
Excellence in Education for a grant to bring Drennen
back for the workshop.
"The students developed a grasp of concepts in math
by utilizing the visual arts," Lutz said.
About 50 pieces of ail that resulted from the
workshop will be on display at the museum from
Thursday to April 17. An opening reception is
scheduled for 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
"Some of the resulting work is just beautiful," Lutz
said. "The students really had to think about
composition and how math worked through
composition."
Something
Extra
The exhibit also serves as senior projects for two
THS students. The pair coordinated the exhibit and
helped select the pieces, and they'll be involved in
the installation of the artwork. Every senior at THS
has to complete a comprehensive project before
graduation.
"We want the community to come support the senior
projects," Lutz said, "as well as see the students'
artwork."
